functional nutritionIt’s so confusing out there, in our world, we are bombarded with TV ads telling us to talk to our Doctor with a certain new medications. It’s like they are telling us we know more than them. Dr. Google is everyones new best friend, people are researching through social media, watching what others do and think it’s what they “should” do too. Working with a holistic nutrition consultant will help fine tune what you need personally. I will also work functionally. What does that mean? A functional nutritionist has been trained to evaluate the needs, goals and sensitivities of each individual. Taking a holistic approach to a person’s nutrition, I look at each individual as a whole, customizing a plan that accounts for food sensitivities, exercise regime, lifestyle, and their current mental/mindful health practices. Functional nutritionists are interested in the intricate connections between diet, lifestyle, and well-being.  I view food as medicine and understand that a multidisciplinary approach to nutrition helps people achieve long-lasting vitality. Personalization is the main difference between functional and conventional nutrition. Functional nutrition focuses on the client instead of the “disease”. It is a personalized method of optimizing your health based on your individual genetics, lab values, lifestyle, and more.

I take a step even further with functional testing to find key components to “why” the body is not preforming to its very best. Digging in to find the root cause can take can some time, but the effects in the long run to heal the whole body and not just looking at one specific thing.  Blood work, stool testing, food sensitivity testing, hormone testing, genetics, heavy metals, and much more…

What we were taught:

Jenny Craig, Jane Fonda, P90X, south-beach, weight watchers, nutri-system, are these even remotely healthy.  Now there are so many “diets” to follow, like it’s the only way to eat if you have a “specific” problem then do this exact way of eating, from keto, FODMAPS, low carb, Mediterranean, high fat, calorie reduced, intermittent fasting, sugar-free, plant based, nightshade free, and the list goes on and on.

What we know:

These do not work. There may be a difference for a few weeks, a even in few months, but honestly you will come right back around to the same issues you had before. These do not teach you anything about why you are eating this way. You may think you know exactly how to eat, and then go out for a special occasion, or a friends house for dinner and “can’t eat” anything. I am there to inform and teach you how to eat at every occasion and the whys behind it. There is no ONE way to eat, ever, you are an ever changing body and mind and you cannot eat the exact same way in a certain diet. Plus what happens when you are “done”? These all above claim they work, but again, most people are trying bits and pieces of these diets/programs. How many times do you see a “2-week challenge” or a 30 day reset. What happens afterwards? These are addressing only food choices as well, not diving into you as a person and what is causing your exact symptoms and reasonings. I will stress this again, every single person is different, and we also heal differently. There is no timing where one can say this will take exactly 45 days to feel better. It’s all about you and your body and what you put into the healing.

Weight is so emotional:

This is tough one for many people, and we all want the fast process to lose weight. Weight is all relative and is also ebbs and flows with us throughout our ages. There is a lot of guilt, shame, childhood trauma and layers of these traumas that are holding inside the reasoning why weight just doesn’t drop off of us. Toxins are also stored in the fat cells, so when one does weight loss too fast we may have more detrimental problems. The weight didn’t get there overnight, so it’s not going to come off over night, nor should it. Holistic nutrition is about pattern changes that will stick and stay with you. Many times we make promises and then get frustrated after a few weeks of “trying” only to get defeated. Holistic nutrition and functional health is about learning a better way, a healthier way and understanding the why. It takes a bit of patience and dedication to loving yourself, knowing that you can do this and are worthy of change. Understanding the why and the root cause is my job to dive deep into the cause and help reverse it in order to live a life you want.

Our society has normalized medications:

When did this happen, can you remember? I was at the Doctors office doing my skin check screening and was asked what medications am I on? Like that was a normal thing to ask, I answered, “none”. They looked at me as if they have never heard that answer before. They were like nothing? Do you take Advil or Tylenol? I said no again, and why would I? However, this has become a normal. Our normal. All medication disrupts our gut health. Whether is an anti-depressant (only to lead more problems down the with more mental health) Tylenol/NSAIDS, or even antibiotics. Thinking these are helping us, maybe only in the moment, but only to burden the body in the long run.

 

There isn’t any trust:

So much skepticism going around, most likely from trying so many things and having them not work. Marketing is on overload, social media is insane in every department, Doctors don’t know anything about the why the body is facing challenges, they do know what medication to make the symptoms go away, but do they look at how the problem got there in the first place? OR how to relieve it? These are a bunch of bandaids, without healing what’s underneath. There are so many lies, and we need to dig through them to discern what is truth and what isn’t.

Trust your GUT:

As a holistic nutrition consultant, I truly want to find the answers you have been searching for. Why can I not lose weight. How can I get my thyroid to function better. What is causing me to be so forgetful and stressed. Why do I have anxiety. Why am I constantly having digestive problems with everything I eat. How can I stop having gas. My body is so tired. I have heard so many of these and more of problems and not getting answers from there previous practitioners. They are in search of finding someone who can help them, and then they find me. But, now I need to dig through all the skepticism that they already have talked and talked to -at nauseam about their problems and are already on the bandwagon to not think anything else can be done. This is where we have a conversation and I share my whole- well rounded program, not just looking at the key symptoms but focusing on the whole body. Mainly because we cannot just heal one thing. The gut, the microbiome, the reason, the diet, the lifestyle, the digestion, all need to be in part of the healing.
